The main part of the cylinder block can be either barrel or bore that moves back and forth in an engine piston or separate sleeve or liner. The former is mainly used in gasoline engines and can not be replaced. The latter is used in diesel engines. Cylinder liners are mainly constructed in close-grained cast iron, as this material can withstand high heat and pressure developed in combustion space at the cylinder's top. It can also generate minimum friction when piston and sealing rings move.
Engine is the most important part of automobile, upon which its performance depends. A cylinder liner forms a critical part of an engine that results in heat production in the engine. The three types of cylinder liners available are as follows:
Dry Liner: Dry liner is the most thin liner made of high-grade materials, like cast iron and ceramic-nickle plating. This basic piston protector can withstand high temperatures and protect from impurities. This liner does not contact with the engine coolant. It provides a close fit with the jacket in the cylinder block with a motive to safeguard the piston against impurities and heat. It is ideal for small engines.
Wet Liner: The wet liner cylinder has portable walls, that fit into the cylinder using gaskets. The outer surface directly contacts with the engine coolant, which is why it is known as wet liner. It is ideal for medium and slow-speed engines.
Finned Cylinder Liner: This cylinder line works much like dry cylinder liner. There are tiny fins on this liner that allow drawing of inflowing with great force around the cylinder for the purpose of cooling. It is ideal for the air-cooled engine.
